At first glance, the fabric of our Selvedge Natural Denim Cap might look more like a canvas than a denim. In fact it is very much a denim. In the world of workwear fabrics, denim and canvas stand as stalwarts, each with its own distinct characteristics. Denim, with its signature twill weave, offers a softer touch that molds to the wearer over time, balancing durability with comfort. Canvas, on the other hand, boasts a plain weave that results in a stiffer, more robust material.

The Okayama prefecture, where the fabric for our cap is made, has emerged as an unlikely epicenter of denim craftsmanship. What began in the 1960s as a pivot from traditional workwear to jean production has blossomed into a globally recognized hub for premium denim. The watershed moment came in 1973 when Kurashiki Spinning produced Japan's first domestically made denim fabric, allowing for end-to-end production in Okayama. This development cemented the region's reputation for exceptional quality, characterized by traditional methods like indigo dyeing and the use of shuttle looms for selvedge denim.
