Tested on the streets of New York City and the river valleys and mountains of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Alaska. The Cap of Courage is a timeless embodiment of comfort, style, and function, it is standard issue around here, uniform at Best Made Company.”- original product copy for The Cap of Courage, circa 2010

The Cap of Courage remains standard issue at Best Made, and—for the first time—it's made in the United States. Using a fine lambswool yarn (finer than Merino wool), we partnered with a small knitting mill in Texas for this next evolution. The fiber comes from South Africa and is processed, spun, and dyed by a 157 year old mill in Kinross, Scotland. Our caps are seamlessly knit, and neatly finished with our signature Best Made X-stitch on a grosgrain ribbon.

Relative to past iterations of The Cap of Courage, we can confidently say this version only raises the bar. The lambswool fiber is exceptionally soft (comparable to cashmere), warm, breathable, and durable. The construction, fit, and comfort are as good as they’ve ever been.

The lambswool in our Cap of Courage comes from a South African sheep known for its exceptionally fine fibers (18.5 microns) that are longer than typical lambswool (21-24 microns), and even finer than most merino wool (19.5 microns). These sheep, raised under high animal welfare standards, develop uniquely soft wool due to the favorable environment in which they are bred and raised.

The wool is processed by an historic yarn manufacturer in Scotland. Beginning with carefully selected raw fibers, it undergoes multiple quality checks before it is dyed. The fibers are blended for color consistency, followed by a carding process. Modern mules spin the yarn using long draws for exceptional roundness and volume, after which it is wound and twisted using traditional methods.

The yarn is knit in Texas on precision Japanese machinery. The caps are knit using a "Whole Garment Knitting" / zero waste technology which results in a seamless construction. To start they are knit in a thicker 2x2 rib cuff, and then an all-over 1x1 rib. The rib narrows down to just a few needles, where it presses off the machine, and is hand-finished.
