Story

With a turn of the key, set this wind-up rowboat skidding across the water. Made by the Paya company, this is an incredibly rare piece — based on a 1922 design and created using the original tools, dies, and molds, only a hundred or so remain. Paya traces its roots to 1902, when tinsmith Rafael Paya began making toys. His sons expanded the business, until their mechanical models were competing with the more established, traditional operations in Germany and France. Unfortunately, they shuttered in the mid-20th century — but thankfully, a few of their works still remain. From mechanical clocks to models like these, automatons have captured the human imagination dating back to ancient Greece — see why for yourself.
